Alison Woodley Woven Textiles
Having completed an MA in Contemporary Crafts at UCA Farnham in 2007, Alison Woodley has worked as a freelance weaver and designer. She is now concentrating on producing her own unique designs all woven by hand on her large swedish countermarch loom.
Alison's current work is inspired by two contrasting sources; modern architecture and historical textiles such as old fashioned samplers and quilted blankets. The 'grid' design has developed from the idea of a structure being at the heart of architecture, family trees and woven textiles, all things that Alison is passionate about.
"I am fascinated by the qualities of different yarns and how they behave when woven and finished at different temperatures. I work primarily with wool as I find it still has the potential to surprise me; even the slightest change in the woven structure can alter the feel of the end product."
Alison most recent work is a collection of scarves woven in lambswool and angora. The scarves combine the subtle and sophisticated 'grid' design with contrasting brightly coloured hand stitching. The same cloth can be woven as cushion covers and blankets.
